Federal income tax law includes many provisions designed to support start-up and small farm businesses, including alpaca farms and ranches. These provisions allow for operating expense and other deductions that can significantly reduce federal income taxes for individuals and families operating “for profit” farm businesses. The farm tax advantages were designed to help farm businesses during their start-up and growth phases, when initial investment expenses tend to be higher and initial income from sales of livestock, products, and services can be low. This seminar will cover the basics of tax math, types of “for profit” farm businesses, deductible farm expenses, capital expenses and depreciation, using IRS Form 1040 Schedule F (Profit or Loss from Farming), and identify resources available for more detailed information.  This is an introductory-level presentation; advanced knowledge about federal income taxes is not required!
